The City of Love and a romantic capital par excellence, Paris has been the rendezvous of lovers since time immemorial, and today offers a wide choice of activities for two. For Valentine's Day, why not enjoy a romantic stroll on the Ile de la Cité, the island in the Seine close to the Hotel Albe Saint-Michel.
A route dotted with beautiful monuments
Known as the cradle of Paris, the Ile de la Cité is full of curiosities to discover with your special one. Your first stop will be the Pont des Arts, or ‘Bridge of Lovers’ which, not so long ago, was crumbling under a mountain of padlocks hung by couples from around the world to seal their love.
Then it’s on to a true Parisian icon. The world-famous Notre-Dame Cathedral is one of the capital's flagship monuments, remarkable for the beauty of its architecture and exquisite stained-glass windows. While you’re in the vicinity, don’t miss the romantic Square du Vert-Galant, named after Henri IV, well-known for his many conquests.
Strolling in the Place Dauphine
Head next for the Place Dauphine, one of the five royal squares in Paris. Unusual in its triangular shape, it’s home to a small green space where petanque enthusiasts regularly meet. Quiet and relaxing, the Place Dauphine is home to several art galleries and small restaurant-cafés gathered here in perfect harmony.
A trip to the flower market
Situated in the Place Louis Lépine since 1808, this picturesque market selling flowers and birds (the latter on Sundays) has become an institution on the Ile de la Cité. Part covered and part open-air, its venerable old pavilions shelter hundreds of flowers, shrubs, trees and other plants; a collection that includes rare species from around the world.
